Rebuild or Re-power: QB Controversy in Miami? Not According to the Dolphins

Tua is our starter and the bright future of the franchise. If the Dolphins have a history of one thing, it’s transparency, for better or worse.  Facts, Watson wants out of Houston, and that is all we know.

Now here’s the speculation. Supposedly, Watson wants to come to Miami or the Jets, which have the most to offer draft capital and players wise, which contradicts his leverage with the Texans organization.  Either way, he wants the first ticket out of Houston and it doesn’t even have to be First Class at this point. Here is what I will say, It’s nice to have Miami be a positive place players want to come. The Dolphins have created a diverse, comfortable, and attractive place to come for star players. That’s a credit to what Grier and Coach Flo have built.  The Dolphins feel like one of the more stable franchises in the NFL right now when it comes to coaching staff through the front office. Credit given were credit is due to Coach Flo and Chris Grier in building such a culture within the organization.

Rebuilding:  Tua threw for 1800 yards 11 TD and 5 INT while going 6-3 in his rookie campaign.  His ROOKIE campaign, throwing to players off our practice squad in most of those games.  Grier and Coach Flo told the Dolphins faithful that we were rebuilding.  Whatever that meant, I bought into it.  We dumped two All-Pro talents in Minkah Fitzpatrick and Laremy Tunsil in the act.  It’s not like Grier has swung and missed on our other first round draft picks over the years.  To me, the future is clear and the future is with Tua under center.  The Dolphins not only stated that Tua was our starter immediately following the season but the organization double-downed on that statement in the past week by surrounding Tua with coaches that he is comfortable with and that will bring out the best in him.

The Dolphins have rebuilt the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball and now need to draft or acquire playmakers this offseason.  The Fins desperately need a slot WR, RB, LB, and more to continue to build around Tua. He was 6-3 without any real . No offense to Mack Hollins, but he didn’t have the connection that Tua had with Gesicki. Jakeem Grant going down with what ended up being a season-ending injury during the crucial stretch of games, DeVante Parker missing time towards the end, and the 28th ranked rushing game in the league didn’t help Tua shine in his first year.  By the way, Steve Young, HOF Quarterback, best lefty to ever do it, threw for 2200 yards, 8 TD, and 13 INT in his rookie campaign.  He also played 5 more games than Tua RELAX!

Re-powering:  I’m not going to spend a ton of time here.  Look, The defense is legit, we have DPOY candidate and All-Pro corner in Xavien Howard.  Hypothetically, Bring in Watson, move Tua, hang on to some draft picks somehow, and fix the offense through free agency.  The salary cap is going down this off-season which is a rarity. Can the dolphins sign a slot WR, LB, build the O-line and possibly draft Najee Harris from Alabama or Travis Etienne from Clemson?  If we can do that, and not mess up the current defense, the dolphins would go from a rebuild in 2019 to a Super Bowl favorite in 2021.  If the Dolphins can’t afford to do that, they are creating an environment that Watson is trying so desperately  to escape in Houston and this vicious cycle of searching for a franchise QB continues.

I’m staying Tua True on this. I think Tua is our franchise QB and Grier and Coach Flo are transparent and truthful about the future of the franchise.  If the Jets sign Watson, and the Patriots sign Stafford the Dolphins would then have the 4th worst QB in the AFC East going into 2021 which is a nightmare scenario for Dolfans across the globe.  But those are all speculations.  Who’s to say Tua isn’t the best QB in the division in a couple of years?  He’s an elite talent that is fueled by competition.  Let’s sit back and enjoy the ride.

As Denzel Washington says in Remember the Titans, “Be patient. It’s like novicane, just give it time.”
