A Quick look at Dolphins OC Candidate Eric Studesville
The name Eric Studesville has been floating around the past couple of days, mainly for his involvement calling offensive plays in the Senior Bowl. Whether or not this is “part of the process” that Coach Flo mentionedat his press-conference on Wednesday, will be determined in the coming days. Many are speculating that Coach Flo is monitoring the play calling of Eric Studesville as part of the interview process to become the new offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.
Studesville, 53, has been in the league since 1997 working mainly with running backs. He was promoted to interim head coach for the Denver Broncos in 2010 before getting demoted back down to running backs coach in 2011. He went 40-14 from 2012-2015 in Denver as the RB coach, behind the General, Peyton Manning. Let’s be honest, Peyton ran the Broncos from 2012-2015. Besides that, Studesville has a career record of 179-205 record as a coach in the NFL, which is a win% of 46%. These stats all according to www.profootballhistory.com.
In 2020, the Dolphins ranked 21st in the NFL in rushing, averaging just over 105 yards per game in 2020. The last three games of the season, the Dolphins averaged 150 yard per game which ranked 6th among the entire NFL. Studesville was able to accomplish all of these things with the backfield consisting mainly of Myles Gaskins, Salvon Ahmed, and Matt Breida (pro-football-reference.com).
Can you imagine what Studesville could do if the Dolphins were to add Najee Harris to the backfield? It makes sense to look at a run heavy offensive coordinator when you have already brought in other offensive assistants to make Tua better.
I usually root for the new, young, gunslinger type of OC, but is that really what the Dolphins are building?
Studesville will bring balance to a young Dolphins team eager to bring home a championship.
